Interview with Staci Godsey, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I opened my first consignment store off of County Line Road almost 20 years ago with my mom. It was definitely a bonding experience … bonding with not only my mom but also with the community and the consignment philosophy. After several years, we sold that store so I could continue my education and raise my son. A few years later, the City Consignment opened at its current location, I became the store manager and two years later in June of 2013 I purchased the store. With the help of my best friend, Amy, we revamped the interior of the store and the quality of the merchandise turning it from the City Consignment to the City Consignment Boutique.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Transparency with every one of our clientele is one of the ways that makes us unique. We have a website that gives our consignors the ability to watch their items throughout their consignment period. They can see a description of the item, what it is priced at and if the item is available or sold. It will also show the date when the consignment period ends so they can pick up the unsold items or opt to donate them to Porter Thrift, which makes money for the hospital patients that cannot afford their care. We also take a variety of brands from Ann Taylor to high-end couture, which allows everyone to be able to get something they like at a price they can afford.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: The best part of this job is the power and support of the community around us and the bonds that are created not only with us and our customers, but also among the customers themselves. We enjoy bringing our customers together every few months for a wine and cheese night to allow networking to happen while they enjoy a discounted night of shopping, a good glass of wine and laughter.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Effective advertising and marketing seem to be our biggest challenges. We have tried many avenues of advertising, from social media to one of Denver’s major news websites, with marginal success. Word of mouth seems to be the most effective means of growing our business.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I believe my customers would be surprised to learn that I lost my only child, my son, Cody, nine years ago at the age of 12½. Because, upon entering our store, you will walk into a very upbeat environment. We always enjoy talking and laughing with our customers and enjoy the friendships we build on a daily basis. They would also be surprised to learn that each and every one of them are my motivation and inspiration to walk with my head held high.
