DENVER (AP) — A bill to allow transgender people to change the gender listings on their birth certificates without undergoing gender-reassignment surgery has won initial approval in the Colorado House.
The bill would also allow people to have their original birth certificates sealed, instead of having them marked to say that the gender has been changed.
The bill passed after a lively debate. The vote was unrecorded but fell generally on party lines, with most Democrats supporting and most Republicans opposed.
Some Republicans said the change could lead to fraud
A recorded vote is required before the bill moves to the Senate, which is controlled by the GOP and likely to reject the change.
