Several crashes, including a fatal accident, have forced closures on Interstate 225 in Aurora Friday morning and the city was placed on accident alert.
At about 4:45 a.m. police responded to a rollover at I-225 and East 6th Avenue in which a passenger was thrown from an Oldsmobile Bravada.
The passenger and driver were taken to a local hospital. The passenger died and the driver has injuries that are not life threatening, police said in a media release.
The Oldsmobile SUV was heading southbound when the driver lost control on an icy roadway, police said. Neither the passenger or driver were wearing seat belts.
As the SUV veered out of control it hit an RTD bus. No passengers were on the bus at the time and the bus driver was not injured.
Southbound I-225 is anticipated to be closed through rush hour and will be opened upon completion of the on-scene investigation.
Names of the pair in the SUV were not released.
