On Monday, Evergreen baseball will sponsor its inaugural Cancer Awareness Day.

Before the first pitch against Arvada, at 4 p.m., in the Class 4A Jefferson County League, the program and its leaders will recognize in a pregame ceremony various members of the Cougar baseball family who have been affected by cancer. There are several members of our parent group who are currently battling the disease and others who have met this challenge in the past.

Officials and all on hand will take a moment to honor and recognize those families and show support by standing together in solidarity as a baseball family.

Part of that effort will involve conducting a simultaneous “First Pitch” pregame ceremony featuring a representative of every family in the group affected by cancer who elects to participate.

Of note, the family of varsity captain Jackson Grise realizes the difficulties of the disease. Both of Grise’s parents, who have been longtime supporters of Evergreen’s program, are battling cancer. Program officials and followers have hope that Jackson’s dad, Glenn Grise, will feel well enough to be able to participate in the first pitch ceremony.

The Cougars have dedicated their season to the Grise family.

Glenn and wife Mary Pat as well as the others being recognized at this event are inspirational examples of faith, perseverance and determination, and everyone in the program is honored to recognize these families on this special day, according to head coach Steve Jones and program boosters.
