It is strange Gov. John Hickenlooper’s first veto of the 2015 session could be over keeping the child watchdog role under his purview and not the legislature’s.

Hickenlooper this week sent a letter decrying Senate Bill 204, which calls for moving the child ombudsman to the legislature from the executive branch.

The bill is moving quickly through the statehouse to his desk, where it appears it will be met with a veto pen.

The wrestling over control of the independent, autonomous position doesn’t make sense.

Hick’s letter says there is no need for the move because there hasn’t been any interference, but a by The Denver Post’s Jennifer Brown refutes that.

The governor seems to be vexed by the possibility of losing ultimate authority over an office that would be strengthened by the bill.
