Denver Mayor Michael Hancock recently signed on to a court brief by dozens of cities and counties in support of President Obama’s immigration executive action. (Brent Lewis, Denver Post file)

Re: “Denver joins cities opposing hold on immigration executive action,” April 6 The Spot blog post.

Kudos to Mayor Michael Hancock for signing the Cities United for Immigration Action amicus brief in support of President Obama’s executive order on immigration. Federal Judge Andrew Hanen’s injunction against its implementation does nothing to resolve the immigration impasse. The delay only puts families at risk, detracts from other law enforcement priorities, and impedes economic growth.

Obama’s executive action is based on respect for families, protecting their and the community’s security and stability. The order augments job creation. Having the opportunity to work legally, immigrants can pursue jobs appropriate to their skills thereby increasing economic productivity. This translates into increased tax revenues. Mayor Hancock and his peers value these benefits over political partisanship.

House Democrats, including Reps. Diana DeGette, Ed Perlmutter and Jared Polis, filed a similar brief. Hopefully, the momentum is now toward just and humane immigration reform with a clear path to citizenship for our immigrant community members.
