Colorado Christian University doesn’t have to let a gay GOP group set up a table at one of its events. That’s what the First Amendment and religious freedom are about.
But the event in question — the Western Conservative Summit — happens to have grown over the years into a huge draw for prominent national conservatives. So when summit organizers disinvited the Colorado Log Cabin Republicans, it inevitably became national news.
It would be unfortunate if the incident sent the message that the broader conservative movement still sees gay groups as unacceptable participants in its politics — because it’s long past time to reject that reactionary idea.
Fortunately, younger conservative and libertarian attitudes toward gays have changed markedly in recent years — and in the direction of the acceptance they clearly deserve.
