As a swimmer in the masters 55 to 59 age group, Craig Petersen is used to being compared to a vintage of distinction.
As with a fine wine, he just gets better with age.
Petersen was back in the pool again Thursday in the United States Masters Swimming Championships in San Antonio and he was back in the winner’s circle. His time of 10 minutes, 33 seconds was the best in the 1,000-meter freestyle for his age group.
It was a big day overall for the Colorado Masters Swimming team. Mike Mann of Denver set a national record of 10:42 in the 60 to 64 age group competition.
“We’re not finished here with what we did today,” Petersen said.
The victory Thursday was Petersen’s fifth masters national championship title.
The focus for the Colorado team now turns to the 400 individual medley and the 200 freestyle Friday, the 500 freestyle and 200 backstroke Saturday and the 200 medley Sunday.
Petersen and the Colorado Masters Swimming team have been on a role. Four weeks ago at the Colorado state championships, team members that included Greg Scott, Kirk Anderson, Mann and Petersen set national age group records in three relay events.
