Throw down the gauntlet
Moms, gardens, Mother’s Day; they all go together like peas in a — well, you get the idea. But say Mom’s got enough plants. We can’t imagine her not needing these arm-saving gauntlets from Womanswork. They’ll have Mom covered against thorny plants, insects and sun. The wrist snugs up with elastic so that the fingers don’t get full of soil, leaves or mulch, and the top of the arm tightens with a pull cord. Womanswork is a female-owned small business. Three sizes; suggested retail $29.95; at selected indie garden centers or online.
Toast happier plants
If you’ve worked hard on your garden or patio in order to have a great space where you can kick back and drink wine, this little item might give you more time to do just that. Plant Nanny terra cotta watering spikes let you reuse wine bottles to give your plants consistent water. Best of all, you can see the water’s level at a glance (not to mention recollecting that superb vintage and the good friends with whom you drank it). The stakes come in four-packs for around $20 or singles for around $8 and are sold online and at many garden centers.
