Police in riot gear line up to enforce a curfew imposed in the aftermath of rioting following Monday’s funeral for Freddie Gray, who died in police custody in Baltimore. (David Goldman, The Associated Press)
Hitting and whacking children is wrong. A Baltimore mother has received much acclaim for hitting and chasing her son for his participation in the city protests. I understand her not wanting her son to be involved in the protest. I do not understand why parents think it is OK to discipline their children by hitting them, whether the children are 1 year old or 16 years old. We should not be surprised, then, when children use the same tactics to express their disapproval of others. Firm discipline of children starts with high expectations and enforcement. That should not include hitting them, especially on their heads. Violence usually begets more violence. It seldom improves relationships.

When a 5-foot-tall mother is trying to get the attention of a recalcitrant 6-foot-tall teen son hellbent on trouble, I say: If it takes a lasso or a frying pan to save him from a life of crime, go for it.
