Gov. John Hickenlooper sent a letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker last month, saying the ban on export of crude oil produced in the U.S. should be lifted. (Helen H. Richardson, Denver Post file)

Re: “Colorado Gov. Hickenlooper joins call to allow exports of U.S. oil,” May 1 news story.

It breaks my heart to see our governor, who has a degree in geology, support the gas and oil industries by asking Penny Pritzler, the U.S. commerce secretary, to open up exports of oil.

Why would we export this crude oil when the U.S. continues to import 7 million barrels a day? Doesn’t Hickenlooper understand that lifting the ban will put more power in the hands of OPEC because they control the supply and set production quotas?

Imagine new job opportunities in renewable energy, creating different employment opportunities and increased money for the state. Imagine no more disastrous explosions destroying our environment, polluting our air and water, and damaging the health of humans and animals. Imagine!
