All the schools in Burlington will be closed Thursday because of what the school district’s website called “an unforeseen situation.”

Reached Wednesday night, Kit Carson County Sheriff Tom Ridnour said his department was interviewing some juveniles about a threat that was made to students at one of the city’s three schools.

“At this point, it’s just a precaution…we can’t even validate the threats at this point,” said Ridnour, who added there was no threat to the community.

Asked why threats to some students would prompt the closing of the city’s elementary, middle and high schools — Ridnour said he was unsure.

“That was the school district’s call,” he said.

Attempts to reach members of the city’s school board Wednesday night were unsuccessful.

Located on Interstate 70 near the Kansas border, Burlington is the county seat for Kit Carson. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 4,254.
