The Denver psychedelic surf-rock band describes its music as “a little something to make you shake all over.” And boy howdy, it does just that. If you let this Blue Rider music seep deep into your backbone, possibly dripping down your spine to your hips, you could find yourself involuntarily gyrating like Gidget at a Dick Dale acid party.

This is a good thing. In fact, this is a great thing. The Blue Rider — most likely the name is a surfing reference, though the blue demon horse of DIA fame on their debut EP complicates this theory — treat surf rock with fresh, affectionate reverence. But this is not a nostalgic postcard from the 1960s California. The Blue Rider is equally garage rock and heavy blues, a la The Black Keys. At times, the vocals even have the swagger of Mick Jagger.

On June 5, The Blue Rider will perform with — a Denver band with a more noir take on surf rock, which can only lead folks to wonder why Denver is in love with this sound — at the .

Below, download “Year of the Horse,” the title track off an LP planned for release later this summer. The band also just debuted a video for the track that perfectly captures the frenetic nature of the song.
