When they hit, they don’t pitch; when they pitch, they don’t hit.
A team with such a small margin of error, the Rockies play baseball with maddeningly unpredictability. Except for CarGo — he just stinks this year.
In the past nine games, , Colorado has averaged 2.88 runs per game. Yes, yes, scoring is historically down, but we’re talking about a team that earlier in the season — and, really, in many of the previous seasons — has hit and hit. The Rockies went 2-7 in that stretch, and they return home to rainy Denver to face the Philadelphia Phillies.
Rain. The Phillies. Last place.
I can’t think of a less-enticing night to go to Coors Field.
The Rockies have the fewest wins in baseball (13).
Nothing is going to change until they start eating innings consistently and hitting consistently, and this is the Rockies we’re talking about, so nothing is going to change. The only thing consistent about the Rockies is inconsistency.
I’m rather fascinating with what the heck happened to Carlos Gonzalez. For years, he defined confidence. Now it’s swag amiss with each swing-and-miss. His slugging percentage looks more like his old batting averages (.342), and his .197 batting average is hovering over the Mendoza Line like fly ball flirting fair or foul above the foul line. , and one key to his frustration this season is he’s hitting ground balls at an alarming rate, and hitting few hard balls, ground or otherwise. In 2010, CarGo’s percentage for balls hit categorically “hard” was 52, which is astounding. Fast-forward to 2013, it was still at 45 and last season it was 39.5. This season? Just 13.6.
One man is not the reason the Rockies are the Rockies. But his tailspin could be emblematic of the team’s tailspin, as pitching seldom complements hitting, and vice versa.
