Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. (Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras, AP file/The Guardian)

Re: “No sympathy for Snowden,” May 18 letter to the editor.

Letter-writer Carol Brown calls Edward Snowden a traitor. The National Security Agency has claimed that Snowden imperiled operatives by leaking NSA data. However, that has yet to be cross-examined. As it is, the pending charges against Snowden are based on laws dating back to World War I that any act can be considered treason, even whistle-blowing, despite any evidence to the contrary. A U.S. appeals court has agreed with lower-court rulings that the NSA collection of mass data is illegal. This in itself exonerates Snowden of any wrongdoing. He has acted in our best interests by exposing the NSA for violating our right to privacy and freedom from wrongful government control. If anyone needs to be charged, itap NSA officials.
