A tornado was spotted Wednesday afternoon near the town of Holyoke along the Kansas border, the National Weather Service says.

The tornado was reported by spotters at about 1:20 p.m., forecasters say.

A tornado watch is in effect for Yuma and Kit Carson counties until 10 p.m. An earlier tornado warning for Yuma County expired at 2:45 p.m.

Warm temperatures are expected in Denver on Wednesday ahead of possible afternoon storms that forecasters warn could bring severe weather to the Eastern Plains.

“Thunderstorms will once again develop this afternoon over the higher foothills then move over the plains by the mid afternoon and continue into the evening,” the National Weather Service in Boulder said in a forecast bulletin.

Small hail and brief heavy rains are possible, forecasters say.

“There is a slight risk that thunderstorms east of the Limon to Sterling line may be strong enough to produce 1-inch diameter hail and wind gusts to 60 mph,” the bulletin said.

More afternoon storms are expected on Thursday ahead of a Front Range cold front that will move through early Friday morning and lead to more rain.

“There may be enough rain to cause renewed minor flooding from the runoff, though the flash flood threat remains low,” according to the weather service.

High country areas above 10,000 feet could see up to 4 inches of snow with Friday’s storm.
