Interview with Kristi Zakrzewski, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: In 2008, we found ourselves trying to find a way to care for our mother, who suffered from dementia. We tried in-home care and found that to be unreliable and insufficient for the help she needed. We then tried an assisted-living home. This seemed to be better in the beginning, but the more we were there, the more we noticed the residents just parked in front of the television. With the house that we grew up in being empty, we looked into the possibility of turning it into an assisted-living home and returning mom to her home.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Most assisted-living facilities are corporate owned. Six siblings own the Well House and we all still talk to each other. This is truly a family business with each sibling adding their own special talents to the business. Many people have asked us if we will open another home, which is not likely. We are passionate about our business and the care we provide. It would be difficult to duplicate it.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: The residents and their families. We strive to make each resident a part of our family — celebrating all the events of their lives. They can teach us so much. It is very rewarding to help a family through the various stages of aging parents.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Our goal when remodeling the original structure was to keep the look and feel of our family home. We were conscious of our neighbors and didn’t want it to be an eyesore. The landscaping was designed to camouflage the handicap accessible ramps. It worked! Our biggest challenge is letting people know where we are and what we do. Many times, people will drive right by because it doesn’t look like a facility.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: The Delva Community Garden located on the grounds of the Well House has really been a garden since 1954 when Ed Delva moved his family from Denver to Arvada. The garden is managed by the Arvada Gardeners and has 20 plots available to rent each year.
