Vice President Joe Biden, accompanied by his family, holds his hand over his heart as he watches an honor guard carry a casket containing the remains of his son, former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, into St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Wilmington, Del. for funeral services on June 6. Standing alongside the vice president are Beau’s widow Hallie Biden, left, and daughter, Natalie. (Patrick Semansky, The Associated Press)

Re: “A national discussion about family values,” June 11 E.J. Dionne Jr. column.

E.J. Dionne Jr. is correct that we all were able to see a wonderful example of family values at Beau Biden’s funeral Mass. I can only hope that each of us takes a moment to see how that young man lived his life. He served this country with a sense of honor and duty, reaching out to those who needed support, whether while serving in the military or in public office.

I hope that especially politicians question their own motives for seeking public office. Is it from a sense of wanting to be special and exert power over others or from a genuine sense of wanting to serve? People may disagree about the solutions to problems, but no matter where you fall on the political spectrum, if you approach public life from a sense of honor and sincerity rather than ego, the country will be well-served.
