Though we may see some warm and dry days, the bulk of July should be somewhat cooler than normal and stormy conditions will be the rule.

To set the stage, here are the normals for the seventh month of the year: The normal high and low on July 1 is 87 and 57, warming to 90 and 60 by July 18, then remaining there through the end of the month.

The July pattern should be influenced by surface highs sliding into the Plains from Canada. These will bring an upsloping southeast flow, which will produce rounds of severe thunderstorms — including hail and tornadoes — every three to four days the first half of the month. The second half of the month will feature typical summer monsoon conditions, resulting in slow-moving thunderstorms and potential flooding after midmonth.

These storms could very well be more frequent that those in the first half of the month.

Overall, the month should wind up cooler and wetter than normal.
