A teen driver died in a weekend traffic crash in Littleton when the SUV he was driving hit a tree.

Evan Carlson, 18, of Littleton, died at the scene, according to a Littleton Police Department media release.

At about 9:05 p.m. Saturday emergency responders were called to the single-vehicle crash on West Mineral Avenue near Long Drive.

A 1999 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Carlson, was westbound on Mineral at a high-rate of speed when it left the road and crashed into a tree in the median, the release said.

Witnesses told investigators the SUV “may have been involved in a street race” prior to the crash, police said.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
