Fort Collins police have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting late Tuesday of a 25-year-old man along the northeast edge of the Colorado State University campus.

Andrew Michael Watkins, 26, is being held at the Larimer County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, police say.

The county coroner’s office identified the slain man as Randall Cargill of Fort Collins and said he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police were called about 10:45 p.m. to 120 W. Laurel St. on reports of a shooting.

“Upon arrival, officers found an adult male lying in the alley having suffered what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds,” police said in a Wednesday news release. “Responding paramedics transported the victim to Poudre Valley Hospital where the victim did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead.”

Police say several witnesses have been identified and interviewed.

“They were acquaintances,” Sgt. Dean Cunningham, a police spokesman, said of the victim and suspect. “It’s not like it was a random act of violence in an alley.”

Police say they will release details as they become available.

“Police believe there are still witnesses who have not come forward with information and who remain to be identified and interviewed,” the release said. “This crime remains under active investigation. No further details will be released at this time.”
