A man who fatally shot his Denver neighbor and shot his wife in the ankles during the same incident was sentenced Monday to 48 years in prison.

A Denver jury found Daniel Abeyta, 33, guilty on June 2 of second-degree murder, first-degree assault and child abuse.

Denver District Court Judge Ann Frick, who presided over , sentenced him to a 40-year prison term for the murder of 47-year-old Sandra Roskilly and eight years for shooting his estranged wife, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

On Aug. 16, 2013, in and outside his home in the 2200 block of South Irving Street. Abeyta held police and emergency responders at bay on the block as he fired a rifle at propane tanks. He was eventually shot by a Denver police officer and taken into custody.
