AURORA — First up, as usual, for the beginning of the high school sports year: boys golfers.

Preseason practice begins Monday for three classifications as the 2015-16 school year opens with fall play. The season begins Thursday.

“It’s here, and we can’t wait to get out there,” said Regis Jesuit coach Craig Rogers.

The Raiders and Lakewood, who tied for second place a year ago, are expected to lead the charge against defending Class 5A state champion Coronado, which won by a whopping 21 strokes. State tournaments are Oct. 5-6 for big schools (at Fort Collins Country Club), 4A (Fox Hill Country Club in Longmont) and 3A (Eagle Ranch Golf Course in Eagle). In 2014, Valor Christian won 4A and Sterling finished first in 3A.

All three medalists last year were seniors.

Boys golfers will be alone for only a week. Fall practice opens in earnest Aug. 17 for football, boys and girls cross country, field hockey, gymnastics, boys soccer, softball, boys tennis and volleyball.

Although boys tennis (Aug. 20) and softball (Aug. 21) also will have early opening, all nine sports will be in full swing by Aug. 27.
