Twenty-five people have applied to become Denver’s next sheriff.

The application deadline was Saturday.

Hillard Heintze, a Chicago-based consulting company, is assisting the city with its search. The consultants reported they are “encouraged by the caliber of applicants for this unique position,” city spokeswoman Amber Miller said in an e-mail to The Denver Post.

Applicants fare from across the United States, Miller said.

Denver has been searching for a new sheriff since July 2014 when from the job amid a string of excessive force reports.

Since then, Hillard Heintze and OIR Group, Los Angeles-based police consultants, have reviewed the department and released a nearly detailing deep problems.

The new sheriff will be expected to take a lead role in the reform and would receive a salary of $167,000.

Mayor Michael Hancock has appointed a committee to review the applications, interview potential candidates and narrow the pool. A list of finalists will be given to Hancock, Miller’s e-mail said.

A hiring deadline has not been set and will depend on the search committee members’ schedules, she said.

Denver is one of two jurisdictions in Colorado where the sheriff is appointed rather than elected.
