The University of Denver hockey team has picked up forward Colin Staub, a Colorado Springs native who could not pass the Air Force Academy’s eye exam. Staub, 21, had hoped to play for the Falcons, but is the final piece to the Pioneers’ seven-member freshman class.

Staub produced 60 points (26 goals) in 60 games for the Wichita Falls Wildcats of the Tier II North American (junior-A) Hockey League last season.

“Colin’s addition makes an already-talented freshman class even better and gives us some great depth at the forward position,” DU coach Jim Montgomery said in a release.

The DU freshman class also includes forwards Logan O’Connor, Jarid Lukosevicius, Troy Terry and Dylan Gambrell and defensemen Blake Hillman and Sean Mostrom.
