Interview with Lauren Giebler, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I started sewing when I was 7 years old and have been making most of my own clothing for almost three decades. I was lucky enough to grow up with access to sewing machines and knowledgeable sewists, something that is rare for many people today. I wanted to create a space where people of all ages could learn to sew and freely express their creativity.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: The Stitching Factory is the only sewing workshop in Colorado to offer sewing classes and workshop space to the public. We provide affordable sewing classes, top-of-the-line sewing machines, specialty tools, worktables and workshop space to anyone and everyone who wants to sew. People may take a class with us or pay a small hourly fee to use our workshop for their own project.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: One of my favorite parts of my job is teaching people how to sew. Sewing is an invaluable skill with limitless possibilities. It promotes self-sufficiency, creativity and concentration, and develops math and engineering skills. It can be a satisfying hobby or it can support a career: learning to sew has the potential to change a person’s life and I love being a part of that.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Like all new small businesses, our biggest challenge is getting the word out. Promoting a new store concept can be tricky and we’ve discovered word of mouth is one of our greatest assets. We sincerely appreciate anyone and everyone who decides to tell a friend about us.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: There is currently an incredible need for qualified sewists and pattern makers all across America. From costume development for movies, theater and dance companies, to fashion design and garment construction, to technical sewing like military parachutes, astronaut suits and automobile interiors, there are many sewing career opportunities out there. Now is definitely the time to starting stitching.
