A hiker who died Thursday on Mount Sopris has been identified.

Robert Baumgartner, 73, of Boulder, died of “coronary artery disease” while ascending the 12,966-foot peak near Aspen, according to the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner’s office on Friday described Baumgartner as an avid climber.

Two Thursday on the mountain, tried to revive him and called 911 for help.

Baumgartner’s body was taken off of the mountain by helicopter.
