The Denver Fire Department is responding to a structure fire at the former Dead Beat Club in southeast Denver late Friday afternoon.
The fire department responded to 4040 East Evans Avenue around 4:25 p.m. on reports of smoke coming from the abandoned building, said Denver Fire spokeswoman Melissa Taylor.
Shortly after crews arrived, firefighters began a defensive attack, meaning they pulled the crew from inside the building and fought it from the outside.
Taylor said crews are fairly certain that no one was inside the building at the time as there is a chain link fence around its perimeter.
She said there are no reported injuries.
The building is a total loss, Taylor said.
Now, firefighters are trying to make sure that nearby structures don’t get involved in the blaze.
Thirteen fire rigs are still battling the blaze and heavy smoke as of 5:20 p.m., Taylor said.
Evans Avenue is closed between Colorado Boulevard and Birch Street, Taylor said.
Colorado Boulevard remains open northbound and southbound with some lane blockages, she said.
