A block party in Holly Square promises walking tours, food competitions, a shoe giveaway and entertainment Saturday.

The NE Walk Fest will hold 10 free, themed walking trips that focus on community safety, neighborhood developments and favorite destinations within a one to two mile radius of Holly Square, according to a festival news release.

The Safe Summer Safe Holly Salsa and Soul Unity Fest will feature a barbecue and salsa cook-off along with live music and performances. Food, a shoe giveaway, art, music and more will make up this combination of festivals that is culminating at the main stage at East 33rd Avenue and Holly Street.

The Walk Fest will run from noon to 4 p.m. and the Unity Fest is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the release said.

“With a high concentration of schools and programs that support family and youth activities, the Holly Square area is a great gathering place for these types of community events,” said Angie Malpiede, spokeswoman for Northeast Transportation Connections.
