Despite the ascendance of Cirque du Soleil, or the continuing protests over its use of animal acts, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is still going strong, thanks partly to shows that attempt to match the allure of the video games, UFC wrestling and monster trucks that have sapped the circus audience over the years. Ringling Bros.’ latest is “Circus Xtreme,” which opened Oct. 1 for a two-week run at the Denver Coliseum. Alongside the usual acrobatic acts and old-school showmanship, “Xtreme” features death-defying BMX riders, free-running tumblers, Mongolian riders and archers, aerialists, a “concrete jungle” and, of course, the human cannonball.
