Re: “Planned Parenthood and the percentage of patients who receive abortions,” Oct. 5 letter to the editor.
Letter-writer Thomas J. Perille, M.D., pointed out that 12 percent of the women being served by Planned Parenthood receive abortions, according to an article in The Washington Post. Planned Parenthood claims that 3 percent of their funds are used for abortion services. Whether we use 3 percent or 12 percent is not relevant. The fact that is most important is that abortions do not decrease when legal services are removed. The women who need abortions continue to have them, but in backrooms that do not provide healthy conditions.
I would like to ask Dr. Perille and others who want to close down Planned Parenthood: What alternative are you suggesting to take care of these women? They will still be there and will still be seeking abortions. Who would provide them services in your plan? Or is the goal to outlaw abortions totally so these women can go through more pain?
