Interview with Paula Lewis, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: The Colorado Cookie Company had operated for 22 years when it closed briefly after its founder passed away in April of last year. Sue McGuire re-opened the shop last July with the new name Susie’s Sweets. After deciding to return home to Bend, Ore., she offered it for sale, and we pounced.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Our cookies stay in the oven until they are fully baked. They are soft by design and because of the ingredients we use, not because they are half baked. Our gift baskets are full of fresh baked gourmet cookies and treats, and never contain store bought packaged cookies. Gift baskets and platters are delivered by our own delivery staff. Our business clients love that we can print their logo on a frosted sugar cookie in full color.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: We love the smiles that appear when our cookies arrive, and we love being a part of the small business community. Helping our clients to express appreciation to their customers allows us to feel we are a small part of their success.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Because our cookies have so much opportunity and potential, our biggest challenge is staying focused on customer populations and market segments that match our strengths and offer the greatest return on our efforts.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: That my name is not Susie!
