
Aurora City Councilwoman Molly Markert is being truly generous for agreeing to take thousands of donated eyeglasses to Ethiopia to help people with vision problems.
But her use of taxpayer money for airline tickets on what appears to be a personal trip should be reconsidered. Markert is spending $1,200 from her council travel fund for the airfare, a
The outgoing councilwoman shrugged off the expense, saying, “I can’t see $1,200 making a particular difference in the city budget.”
It may be a pittance in Aurora’s multimillion-dollar budget, but city officials should be more careful with their spending. And while this may be a noble cause, Markert should pay for the flight herself or ship the glasses instead.
