Coach Gary Kubiak said Brock Osweiler will get the start at quarterback Sunday versus Chicago.
Kubiak said he told the team in meetings in Monday morning meeting.
“All the attention is toward getting (Manning) healthy,” Kubiak said.
Manning will not practice all week and he will be re-evaluated next Monday. Treatment will be Manning’s main plan.
Kubiak said he spent an hour with Manning discussing the decision. Obviously, he said, Manning wasn’t happy with the choice, but Kubiak said the primary goal is for Manning to be close to 100 percent.
Manning has been playing with the foot injury for a few weeks, but it was made worst in Indianapolis playing on the turf.
“There were some things along the way that I should have listened to,” Kubiak said about Manning. “He was doing everything he could for this football team. And he would do it this week too.”
Rookie quarterback Trevor Siemian will be the Broncos’ backup quarterback Sunday.
Osweiler has been getting first-team reps weekly on Wednesday with Manning taking his rest day.
“This is different,” Kubiak said. “It’s all yours starting today.
Osweiler will make his first career start on his 25th birthday Sunday. He went 14 of 24 for 146 yards and a touchdown Sunday against Kansas City.
“He went in there and played with a lot of confidence,” Kubiak said of Osweiler. “I know he’ll do a great job.”
Kubiak also said receiver Emmanuel Sanders is battling a finger injury, but he should have a “normal week” of practice. Sanders came into the game with an ankle injury and also took a hard hit from two Chiefs defenders. He was cleared of a concussion.
