Colin Brough, a 20-year-old college student from Castle Rock, had a high blood-alcohol level and recently had used marijuana when he was shot and killed last month by a fellow Northern Arizona University student, according to a report released Wednesday.

Lawyers for Steven Jones, an 18-year-old from Glendale, Ariz., who is charged with first-degree murder in Brough’s death, said Jones acted in self-defense. Jones told police he was walking past the Delta Chi fraternity house when someone hit him in the face and he was chased as he ran to his car.

Three other students were wounded after Jones retrieved a gun from his car on the Flagstaff campus at about 1:20 a.m. Oct. 9.

The Coconino County medical examiner’s office said Brough was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the shoulder, and indications were that he was facing the gunman. His blood-alcohol content was 0.285 percent, more than three times the legal limit to drive. Also, there was evidence of marijuana in his bloodstream.

He l in Castle Rock in 2013.
