Interview with Dr. Katherine Benson, co-owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I have always loved animals more than just about anything. As a little girl, I never played with dolls but preferred to dress up my labrador, Nitro, and take care of all my many stuffed animals. Thirty years ago, when I was still a California teenager trying to decide where I might go to college, Dr. Kim Stone and Dr. Greg Munger were realizing their dream of opening Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital. I chose to move to Colorado and attend CU Boulder to major in biology. I attended veterinary school at Colorado State University, graduated in 1998 and ultimately came to work for Stone and Munger in 2001. Two months ago, Stone realized his next dream of a well-deserved retirement and I bought into the practice as Munger’s partner. We have since brought Dr. Teegan Wheaton on board and are excited about the next chapter for Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Perhaps our most distinguishing feature is that we are open seven days a week. Saturday and Sunday appointments are available at no extra charge. Wheaton brings to the practice the unique skill set of animal acupuncture, and we have a Class IV healing laser, both of which are wonderful for treating pain, inflammation and many other conditions.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I like that it is never boring. Every day brings different animals and different cases than the day before. There are always new challenges and, as the field of veterinary medicine becomes more advanced, there are exciting new surgeries and treatments to learn about. Truly the best thing about this line of work though is puppies. I love puppies!
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our biggest challenge is when a pet’s illness or injury is severe and owners struggle with finances to provide quality care for their beloved pets. We recommend owners get pet insurance or start a savings account for their pet.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: We host a puppy socialization group with trainer Carie Grant of Denver Dream Dog on Thursday evenings for clients and non-clients alike. We are proud to say that, in the last 10 years, six of our kennel help employees and one veterinary nurse have gone on to veterinary medical school.
