WASHINGTON — With the 2016 election looming, Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams on Wednesday powwowed with election officials from Florida, Nevada and other to strategize on how best to prepare for the coming madness.

The key takeaway of the Beltway-area meeting, Williams said, is that election officials need to do more than just ensure the system works — they have to be transparent enough about the process so that voters have confidence in the final result.

“I think everyone wants to make sure that we have elections that don’t leave anyone in doubt about what actually happened,” Williams said.

One way to do that, he added, was to work closely with other stakeholders through election season so there are no surprises.

The get-together by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission and was held outside Washington D.C. in nearby northern Virginia.

As part of the discussion, Williams said he shared Colorado’s experience in trying to run an election during the .

Election officials must make sure there is “adequate planning for how (an election) should go and what to do if it doesn’t,” he said.
