Matt Asik, in case you didn’t know, has been around ThunderRidge since 2001.
The longtime assistant and first-year head coach of the Class 5A Grizzlies girls is off to a significant start as his team is 9-1 and last month won a segment of the considerable Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.
Better yet, while coaching in middle school in Ohio, then dabbling on the AAU level, Asik also coached against someone you have have heard of — a kid named LeBron James.
James, as an eighth-grader, Asik said, was 6-foot-2, “didn’t stand out and his whole team was good.”
Asik’s group fell heavily to James and his gang “by, like, 90-something to 40 and we were good.”
