Interview with Jessy Mancha, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I got licensed to be a Zumba instructor about five years ago, and I’ve always wanted a studio of my own. I wanted to teach my own style so I could create this family of people from all walks of life who just want to dance. Remixx is Zumba now, but I want to create a studio where all types of dance come together. I do salsa dancing on Friday evenings by appointment and kids hip-hop dance classes at 4:15 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays. I picked Aurora for my first opening because I used to teach Zumba at the Stapleton Recreation Center, and I wanted to stay in the area where most of my students are now.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: The difference in my studio is what I’m trying to do. It’s my long-range vision for combining all types of fitness as one, instead of having, for example, just a yoga class or just a Zumba class or just a circuit class. My vision is to attract the entire family to the studio — women, men and children.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: I love that I can change people’s lives through dance. There’s always a reason to dance. I get students all the time coming in and saying that they can’t dance. That’s not true. Everyone can dance, and I love being able to show them that dancing makes you feel good inside. That’s huge to me.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: The biggest challenge is awareness of where the studio is and that it exists. The studio is still very new, and that hardest part in the beginning is getting the word out there we’re here. The first year is a real challenge. I have my regulars, but the word of mouth needs to spread much more in order for it to grow and stay afloat.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I like to show my passions through dance, and I hold my heart on the outside. I’ve been dancing since I was 10 years old and, for me, dancing is about putting everything out there and just smiling. Smiles are contagious, and anytime I am able to teach people to wear their heats and passions on the outside, it is a success. Dancing is a joy to me, and being able to give that joy that I’ve had all my life back to people through fitness is what it’s all about. It’s about finding something that awakens you and makes you come alive.
