Google updates in Boulder

Has it been that long? Ten years ago today, Google moved into Colorado when it , a software company that Google used to improve its satellite mapping program.

Those 60 employees now number more than 400 at several offices in Boulder. While Google ended up in 2012, former employee and Google’s current Boulder site director Green says many remain.

“Everything isn’t different,” Green said in a recent interview. “We still have a startup, entrepreunerial environment around here. We still have a lot of employee-driven community outreach and we still have a lot of focus on our products. What’s different is the scale is larger.”

On Thursday, the company is hosting a party at its current office. But this whole week has been infused with events to show it is a good neighbor. The company shared a photo from Wednesday’s effort with non-profit Wish for Wheels to build 15 bicycles for children in Boulder County Head Start.

In fact the assortment of buildings Google calls home is getting too crowded. The company broke ground on a new at 30th and Pearl Streets. The new office, which has room for 1,500 workers, is expected to be ready for move in by October 2017. Google also has a data center in Thornton.

While Googlers in Boulder support a variety of Google services — except Google Fiber, no one from that team is based in Boulder — some core projects that have a heavy presence in Boulder include Google Docs, Google Payments and product management for Google Apps.
