A Colorado woman fatally shot her 5-year-old son on Sunday before turning a gun on herself, authorities in central Montana say.

The Musselshell County Sheriff’s Office said the shootings happened just outside the town of Roundup, Mont., about 50 miles north of Billings.

First responders found the 41-year-old mother and her son both with gunshot wounds to their heads. The two were taken to Roundup Memorial Hospital before they were moved to a Billings hospital and later pronounced dead.

Musselshell County Mike Thomas told The Denver Post on Thursday that he didn’t know where the mother and son lived in Colorado. He said they were in Montana to visit family, but declined to release their identities.

Thomas said investigators are working to determine what prompted the murder-suicide.

“We have some ideas, but nothing that we can really comment on,” he said. “There’s a lot of speculation. It was a horrible tragedy.”
