BROOMFIELD — The Broomfield community lost one of its devoted fans Friday morning when longtime photographer David R. Jennings died at 62.
“I am heartbroken right now,” said Al Manzi, publisher of Prairie Mountain Publishing, which owns the Broomfield Enterprise, Longmont Times-Call and Boulder Daily Camera.
“Dave was great at capturing not only amazing photographs of people and events, but he was a gentle man,” Manzi said. “His dedication was amazing. I don’t think he ever missed a day of work.”
A Longmont resident, Jennings began his career with the Times-Call in 1974. In 1979, he became chief photographer of Denver Sentinel Newspapers, where he stayed until 1991. He then worked for Boulder Publishing, now Prairie Mountain Publishing.
“Other than Paul Derda, he is probably the best-known person in Broomfield,” said Karen Smith, executive director of the Broomfield Community Foundation. The city’s rec center is named for Derda, a former parks and recreation director.
“My family — my kids — grew up seeing him everywhere. He was so giving and so sharing of his talents,” Smith said.
Jennings “loved what he did,” said former Broomfield Enterprise editor Julie Baxter.
“His love for Broomfield was remarkable,” Baxter said. “And it was reciprocated by the community. His love of Broomfield wore off on me when I was new to the Enterprise.”
