Re: Is it any wonder so many are drawn to Islamic State?, April 3 letter to the editor.

How sad that letter-writer Steve Venzke sees those joining the Islamic State as doing so because we in the West display values of abandoned Christian belief, dysfunctional governments, and allegiance to materialism, sex and drugs. Really? Apparently Venzke is unaware that we in the West live with freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, freedom to work hard, as well as the ability to earn an education and become productive members of our societies — and this even applies to girls!

I suggest those joining the Islamic State around the world, not just in the West, are generally people who have chosen to avoid taking advantage of the opportunities available to them, who have no life due to their own lack of willingness, and who see themselves going out in a state of glory as murderers of innocents.
