Summit County school children got a bonus day off on Monday, but not because of heavy snow in their mountain community.

Instead, the school district closed schools because Summit School District staffers were stranded in other cities when hundreds of flights were canceled at Denver International Airport.

Spring break for the schools ended last Friday, when a spring snow storm began in Colorado.

A message on the district’s phone message system said: “Due to the untimely Denver snow storms, and as many as 50 percent of staff and substitutes not able to get home, school will be closed on April 18.”

The schools will reopen on Tuesday.
