A Colorado prison inmate was seriously injured in an attack last week by three other offenders, officials say.

Giovanni Laratta, 30, had been in an open day hall and was returning to his cell at the Colorado State Penitentiary in Cañon City on Thursday when the assault happened, said Laurie Kilpatrick, a corrections department spokeswoman.

He received serious injuries and was rushed to medical care, according to a Colorado Department of Corrections news release.

“Three suspects have been identified as participating in the assault and have been placed in restrictive housing,” the Wednesday news release said.

An investigation into the attack is underway by corrections department’s office of the inspector general and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The three other inmates were not identified, and no criminal charges have been filed, Kilpatrick said.

Laratta was serving time for aggravated robbery, felony menacing and theft, according to court records. He is eligible for parole in March 2017.

Colorado State Penitentiary houses some of the state’s most dangerous inmates. Inmates are housed in cells, but up to eight at a time are allowed in the open day halls for recreation, Kilpatrick said. She did not know how many inmates were in the day hall when Laratta was attacked.
