A suspect is in custody after Denver police say an officer was assaulted Wednesday in Lower Downtown.

Authorities say the officer had minor injuries to his face after the encounter in Commons Park near the intersection of 16th and Little Raven streets.

Doug Schepman, a police spokesman, said the suspect arrested was a man, but further information on his identity was not available.

The officer was talking to the man when the alleged assault happened, he added.

“The guy hit the officer and was taken into custody,” Schepman said. “A lot of officers responded. They are still over there sorting through all the details.”

The confrontation happened about noon.
