Access to the lower portion of Waterton Canyon trail, which has been closed Mondays through Saturdays since Feb. 2 during a construction project by Denver Water, will reopen on Sunday.
But access to the South Platte River, from the canyon entrance to mile marker 3.2, will remain closed due to high flows.
The High Line Canal Diversion project still is not completed because of the high flows. The trail is being reopened while construction remains delayed.
Travis Thompson, a spokesman for Denver Water, said the trail will close again when the construction project begins again, likely in the fall, after the high flows subside.
The High Line Canal diversion, built in 1870, is a wooden structure spanning the width of the river, about 1.5 miles up the canyon. It helps direct flows into the pipe that carries water to the canal, when needed.
The original structure had deteriorated and was damaged by high water during the 2015 runoff. Denver Water is working to find a temporary solution to direct water to the canal without the diversion dam this spring.
