A tornado touched down on Colorado’s Eastern Plains Tuesday evening just south of Akron and sent residents scrambling for safety shelters.

The tornado, reported by the National Weather Service at 6:47 p.m., dissipated without hitting town, but the violent storm system continued northeast producing funnel clouds and golf ball-size hail.

Denver7 reported damage in Yuma County including sheds, silos, power poles and windmills that were severed and destroyed. The powerful storm also destroyed outbuildings including work shops and garages.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
