Man pleads guilty to assault in knife attack that prompted law enforcement shooting

A 21-year-old man who was wielding a knife when he was shot by Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin pleaded guilty on Wednesday to attempted first-degree assault in connection with the incident.

Connor MacLaird faces a prison sentence of five to 12 years. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 15 at 9:30 a.m.

happened near Snooty Coyote Liquors in Tabernash as law enforcement, including the sheriff, responded to reports of a break-in. MacLaird was shot several times but did not have life-threatening injuries, according to news reports at the time.

County prosecutors said MacLaird advanced toward the responding law enforcement officers while allegedly brandishing a knife.
