A crash involving four motorcycles Sunday afternoon south of Deckers left a male rider dead, sent his female passenger by helicopter to a Denver hospital with life-threatening injuries and forced the closure of Colorado 67 for more than four hours.

Two other riders were taken to hospital.

Colorado State Patrol troopers responded to the crash, near where Westcreek Road intersects the highway, after receiving a call at 2:40 p.m., patrol spokesman Tim Sutherland said.

It happened after the north-bound rider, with the passenger, failed to make a turn, leading to collisions with a south-bound motorcycle and subsequent crashes, Sutherland said. The driver of the southbound motorcycle and his passenger sustained serious injuries, and riders on two other motorcycles suffered minor injuries.

State troopers investigating the crash did not release further details. Sutherland said crashes involving more than one motorcycle are common.
